My client had collected over 800 Hello Kitty pencils since she was a child, and asked me to create a piece of modern art with them. I used the pencils as pegs between six shelves of hand-carved wood, and drilled 1,200 holes to hold them in place. Only one pencil lies flat - my signature ‘Jennifer’ pencil. The misaligned pencils mirror life’s inevitable rhythm; just when all our ducks are in a row, life brings unexpected twists and turns.
Sculpture created with wood shelves, Hello Kitty pencils, stain.
26 x 60 x 7 inches.
