As I walked slowly through the Long Neck Village in Chiang Rai, I passed a beautiful but visibly tired mother nursing her child. There was a quiet softness to the moment — the instinctive tenderness of nurturing — that stood in contrast to the weight and rigidity of the many gold rings encircling her neck.

In Long Neck Village, Chiang Rai, Thailand, I learned these rings are part of a beautification tradition, believed by some to also offer protection. Girls begin wearing a single ring around the age of five, with more added each year depending on the family's means. As the weight increases, the rings press down on the collarbone and ribs, giving the illusion of a lengthened neck—though the neck itself remains unchanged. Some women are currently beginning to opt out of the neck rings due to health concerns. This beautiful woman was 85 and wore the history of generations with quiet dignity.

In Angkor Wat, Cambodia, a young girl in a yellow dress and matching umbrella walked by me. I told her she looked beautiful in all that yellow, and she smiled and thanked me. When I asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she looked to the side for a moment. “I want to be a model,” she said.

As I watched through my lens, I caught one boy mid-yawn, trying in vain to cover it up. It was a tender reminder that even during the most sacred rites, boys will be boys.

While walking down Bourbon Street, I met a four-year-old girl who stole my heart. She played a flipped-over bucket like it was a grand drum, her energy infectious. At one point, she sprinkled water onto the pail, then grinned wide as each beat sent tiny splashes flying. Her passion, playfulness, and presence were magic in the heart of New Orleans.

While visiting a Maasai village in Kenya, I motioned to a young female adult that I’d like to take her photo. She nodded and as I raised my camera to shoot, she shyly covered her mouth — a gesture both sweet and self-possessed. What made the moment for me was her shirt: bold letters reading “Girl Boss,” adding an unexpected and perfect touch of irony.

While walking through the tiny Long Neck Village in Chiang Rai, Thailand, I came across this stunning young girl, beautifully adorned in traditional dress. I asked her mother for permission to photograph her, and with a quiet nod, she agreed. The girl was looking down, and just for a moment, she looked up — long enough for me to capture this image. Afterward, I purchased a scarf from her mother’s handmade collection, grateful for the exchange.
