I’ve been lucky enough to travel across much of the world and witness some truly breathtaking sunsets. But the ones that bring me the most joy are from my own backyard. Living in Hermosa Beach, California has been a lifelong dream come true. The vivid colors, the rhythmic pull of the Pacific, the silhouettes of our local piers standing against the horizon—it never gets old. In my photographs, I try to bring the best of our beach scenes to light—the quiet beauty, the bold colors, and the timeless rhythm of the ocean.
I captured this just before Christmas at our local Manhattan Beach Pier, during a sunset so vivid I had to stay until the bitter end — no matter how cold my feet got. The sky was purple, pink, and molten gold, and as the tide pulled back, the wet sand turned to glass, stretching that light across the beach.

One evening at dusk, I stood barefoot in the sand after a heavy downpour. Within minutes, the sun’s rays began to break through the clouds — growing brighter, warmer, more golden by the second. I couldn’t believe the sight unfolding above me, right in my own backyard by the beach.

This is the magic of living by our beautiful beach. In my experience, the cool, dry air of November often delivers the year’s most spectacular sunsets — and this one didn’t disappoint. The sky’s myriad colors reflected perfectly onto the rippled sand below, as though painted in place. Adding to the scene’s quiet wonder: the roundhouse, glowing with its annual string of green holiday lights.

I took this photograph with one clear goal: to capture the most timeless image of our beloved Manhattan Beach Pier. It’s a view we’ve all seen — in galleries, on California greeting cards, and snapped in countless locals’ phones. I wanted to create a version worthy of my archives, one that does justice to this iconic spot. A twirled pile of bright orange kelp, left behind by the last big wave, added the perfect splash of texture and color to complete the frame.

Our Manhattan Beach Pier never stops offering new visions of beauty throughout the year. In this moment, the pier stretched gracefully into the Pacific, framed by the last light of a pink-and-violet sunset. Low tide revealed soft reflections of dusk’s pearlescent hues across the sand and water. I shot this with a long exposure to transform the waves into a silken blur — adding to the dreamlike calm of the scene.
